CONVERTING CAPS IN VI

To convert:
THE CAT SAT ON THE MAT
to
The Cat Sat On The Mat

in vim, add the following to .vimrc:

map #1 :s/$[A-Z]$$[A-Z][A-Z]*$/\1\L\2/g

It maps a suitable regular-expression based search and replace to the F1 function key.

DISPLAY ENTIRE BLOCKS

To display entire blocks of text which contain a certain pattern, this one-liner can be used:

cat file | perl -e "$/=''; while (<>) {print if /pattern/)}"

Of course, this can be put in a perl-script pgrep:

#!/bin/perl
$/='';
while (<>)
{print if /pattern/)}

A VI FILE REVERSAL

I know...Enough of the file reversals already. We just really like this one and forgot about it until it was submitted..

A file reversal if you dont have tac or want to use a script.

Edit the file in vi and type:
:g/.*/m0

FINDING BLANK LINES

How to find number of blank lines in a file use the following command:

cat filename |awk ' /^$/ { ++x } END ( print "No. of Blank Lines = " x } '

SUN LOGIN DENIED

If the system is not allowing you to login as root or normal users,first check #eeprom from OS level or printenv from OK prompt.

check tpe-link-test?=true

If it is false, change it to true.

READ IN THE OUTPUT

While in VI, if you enter:

:r !my_command

Then you will insert the output of the command you've entered on the next line of the file that you're editing.

FTY AUTOMATED TRANSFERS

Automatic file transfer through a script between machines using FTP.

If one wants to transfer files between UNIX machines, here are the steps to follow.
1. The .netrc file
a. create .netrc in the home directory.
b. add this line
machine <target machine> login <login name> password <password>

e.g.
machine abc.mydomain.com login deepak password deep123

c. chmod 600 .netrc

2. The Script:
ftp abc.mydomain.com << endl
prompt
put test1.c
quit
endl

This should do it.
